Time-to-Human

HubSpot says the cut is not an AI efficiency. FICO's filing names AI. Amazon points at the pandemic. Hiring is turning into bots talking to bots.

Last week three companies cut jobs and gave three different reasons. The reasons didn’t match. The direction did.

HubSpot is cutting nearly 660 people, about 7 percent of the company. CEO Yamini Rangan’s memo holds two sentences at once. The strategy shifted “from building software that helps customers grow to delivering outcomes for them with AI.” And: “This is not driven by AI-related efficiencies.” The severance is real. The memo generally offers 20 weeks of base pay plus one week per year of service, up to 30 weeks, five months of health coverage, and six months of career transition support. Credit where it’s due.

FICO filed with the SEC on October 6. On October 1, management committed to a plan that eliminates about 15 percent of positions. The filing lists fewer organizational layers, a simpler operating structure, and “integrating AI-driven product development.” It does not say how many people that 15 percent is.

Amazon let go fewer than 1,000 white-collar employees, mostly in Stores, as Prime Big Deal Days wrapped up on October 7. The company said it had “adjusted parts of our Stores business.” Separately, on Fox News, Jeff Bezos said Amazon was in a “very special position” after growing its workforce so much during the pandemic. He was answering a question about roughly 30,000 corporate cuts over the past year, not about this week’s smaller round.

One denies AI efficiency. One names AI in the filing. One points back to the pandemic. My read: the labels differ, but the direction looks familiar. Simpler structures, fewer people in the middle, and more of the budget headed toward the next capital cycle.

The numbers behind the noise

The September jobs report added 29,000 jobs. Unemployment was 4.2 percent. BLS called both little changed. Health care added 17,000. Government lost 17,000. Financial activities was down 7,000, and information was down 10,000.

The August JOLTS report showed 7.1 million openings and 5.2 million hires. BLS called both little changed. Balanced on paper. Selective in practice.

Challenger counts 165,925 announced tech job cuts through September, up 54 percent from the same point last year. Across all industries, employers have cited AI for 120,136 cuts this year, about one in five, and the leading reason cited for the year.

Some of that is real automation. Some of it is AI as the respectable word for cleanup. The public data can’t cleanly separate the two. What I see in my own work is that the first tasks to go are junior and mid-level ones, the work agents can now touch. That work used to be the training ground.

Bots on both sides of the table

The tooling is moving fast. Metaview raised a $60 million Series C on September 30 for agents that source, review, and screen candidates. Workday says Gartner named it a Market Shaper in the 2026 Emerging Market Quadrant for AI agents in HR. And Checkr launched a fraud detection suite with biometric ID matching and deepfake detection.

Checkr’s beta number is the one to remember. In a beta of its resume fraud detection, 36 percent of inbound resumes triggered flags for further review. For software and AI engineering roles, it was half. Those are flags, not confirmed fraud.

When AI writes the applications and AI screens them, trust becomes the expensive part of hiring.

Art Hebbeler feels that from the other side. He’s a 65-year-old IT program director, and he told CNBC he has sent more than 600 applications since January. On one call he assumed an automated line would connect him to a recruiter. A bot interviewed him instead. It repeated questions and interrupted him. He said he would be reluctant to take another one.

His summary is the cleanest description of hiring this year I’ve read: “We have AI tools talking to AI tools, not people talking to people.”

The metric that matters

The scarce resource in hiring isn’t applications anymore. It’s human attention.

Time-to-fill tells you how long a seat stayed empty. It doesn’t tell you how long a qualified person waited before anyone with judgment looked at them. That second number is time-to-human, and most teams I talk to don’t track it.

If you run talent acquisition, start. Measure the gap between the application and the first real conversation with someone who can say yes. If that gap grows while your tool spend grows, the tools aren’t buying speed. They’re buying distance.

If you’re job hunting, the volume game is getting louder. Signal still wins. Referrals, direct outreach, and a clear story beat the 600th application.

What to watch

ASA Staffing World runs in Denver October 12 to 14. Expect more agent demos and fraud-tool pitches. The September JOLTS report is scheduled for November 3, and the October jobs report for November 6.
